PLAYBACK:stl | 2002 –
We also got to facilitate the growth of something we really cared about. What we did: Creative direction, layout, design of each issue, advertising sales, distribution coordination, editing, social media, promotion, website design, webmaster, management of writers, live promotional events and concerts
We wrote articles for almost every issue of the magazine, including its first cover story on They Might Be Giants.
The comprehensive history of PLAYBACK:stl is one that combines two people who are bad at saying no, yet like to accomplish things. Laura and I started the magazine in April 2002 on the idea “how long can it take to do a little publication?” The answer, at first was a portion of two of our weekends each month. By the time we ended the print publication in October 2006 it consumed every waking hour of our lives. What started as a 12-page, black and white ended up as 72-pages, glossy, full color. We distributed, even early on, to about 400 locations in St. Louis, and, as time progressed, to another 100 in the US. By 2006 we had a national distribution deal which would have put us in magazine racks across the US and Canada, but converting the magazine from a free monthly to a pay national just proved to be more than we could achieve. It would have taken more money than we had and we made the painful but wise choice to end publication. There was some crying, but mostly there some relief that we did our best and we could retrieve our lives.
During those years we got to interview and write about some of our favorite people in music. We also got to facilitate the growth of something we really cared about. Every time the increasingly larger truck pulled up to our house with thousands of freshly printed magazines (which smelled awesome) made all the scrambling for advertising dollars, the hours spent hunched over desks, and the three days of distribution that we personally did all worth it.
The magazine continues online and is updated practically every day. It does very well. http://www.playbackstl.com
Want to take a trip through the print history of PLAYBACK:stl? Now you can.
We’ve been spending some time going through the archives of the magazine and putting some of them up on ISSUU which does a pretty good job of making them digital. It is like opening a time capsule. Enjoy.
Here is an incomplete library of the covers (there are 66 total).
